The Winegrowers Association of Georgia is sponsoring its third annual Wine Highway Weekend on Saturday, March 29thst, and Sunday, March 30, 2008.

There will be a $20.00 fee for each participant which will be collected at the first winery visited. Travelers will receive a "Wine Highway Weekend" collectors’ glass which will give them admission to ALL participating wineries at no additional charge. Normal tasting fees will not be charged to anyone participating in traveling the Wine Highway.

Member wineries and Affiliate Members will each provide their own unique open-house format, with many offering food and wine pairings, music, barrel and library wine tastings, discounts, drawings and other special attractions.

Appalachian Outfitters (www.canoegeorgia.com) and the Lumpkin Coalition will be hosting The Beetle Battle Paddle on March 29th. A fun way to help save the Hemlocks! Boat rentals and shuttles for the lower section of the Chestatee River (self-guided) will be offered at the regular rates with 100% of the proceeds going to the hemlock tree defense efforts.

Canoes and double sit-on-top kayaks are $43 and single kayaks are $28. These costs include gear rental and shuttle fees. Shuttles are $10/personal boat. The average float/paddle time for this section is 2.5 hours with plenty of flexibility. Bring a picnic and enjoy it in our outpost picnic area or half way down river on a river beach. This is a wonderful opportunity to give while having a great time.

January is officially here and a new year has begun. The Fall tourists have long left the area. January in Dahlonega can still offer a great weekend getaway.

The winter skies are spectacular this time of year in the evening. The stars are numerous and vivid. You can enjoy seeing the milky way in the dark evening sky. This month's issue of Plenty Magazine addresses light pollution and mentions that two thirds of Americans cannot see the milky way from their homes. This is not the case at Cedar House Inn and Yurts.

Daytime hiking is also pleasant depending on the temperature. It is always a good idea to layer your clothing for outdoor activities.

Tour de Georgia Back in Dahlonega in 2008

We are very excited that the 5th stage finish for Tour de Georgia will be in Dahlonega on Friday 4/25/2008. Last year the race did not come through Dahlonega and we missed many of our regular bike guests who stay with us each year for the event. Dahlonega Fall Colors at Peak

All around Cedar House Inn and Yurts the Fall colors are beautiful. Mountain vistas north of the inn are also spectacular. This time of year is ideal for a hike along the Appalachian Trail to Preachers Rock.

We have made the yurt beds in flannel sheets since the nights are turning colder. The night skies are typically clear with many stars.

Come stay with us and experience the mountains. The Fall season tourists have left and you can enjoy the area without the traffic and crowds. We also have availability during the upcoming Thanksgiving Holidays.

The leaves around Dahlonega have not yet reached their Fall color peak yet. There are many opportunities to enjoy the Fall colors.

The nights are turning cooler and the daytime temperatures are pleasant for those hiking or winery excursions.

The Cardinal Suite has been added to the inn that features a larger living area with simulated electric fireplace surrounded by an oak mantel. Also features a sitting area, queen bed, private bath with tiled shower and full breakfast.

September is bringing cooler daytime and evening temperatures compared to August if the Labor Day weekend trend continues. This weekend the nights were cool and guests enjoyed sleeping with open windows in the inn and yurts.

This month there are several events that may be of interest to guests.

AutumnFest Festival will be held in Dahlonega on the square during the 3rd weekend. Enjoy shopping for unique art and crafts.

The 6 Gap Century Bike Ride across the mountains is a favorite event for many of our road biking guests which occurs the last weekend. Our rooms and yurts are already booked.

August is a great month to visit the inn and enjoy the great outdoors. Hikes along the Appalachian Trail, tubing on the Chestatee River or swimming in Dicks Creek are popular afternoon activities. Appalachian Outfitters provides tubes, canoes and kayaks with pick up services.

We are pleased to have new photos on our web site that do a much better job at depicting what Cedar House Inn & Yurts is all about. Gary and Cheryl Zahora are good friends that visit us from Florida. This is their second visit. They love to stay in a yurt.

Gary is a professional photographer and spent a great deal of time using his new digital camera to take some great pictures of the inn, yurts and grounds. They turned out so well that we added them to our web site.

The days feel like Spring and the nights are cool in the North Georgia Mountains. Guests enjoy sleeping with the windows open in the rooms and yurts. Also perfect weather for hiking to the many waterfalls in the area or enjoying the Appalachian Trail.

New Inn Website for Cell Phone Users

We have just added a new web site for Cedar House Inn & Yurts that is specially formatted and sized for cell phone screens. If your cell phone is set up to view websites go to www.cedarhouseinn.mobi and take a look.

The content of the new mobile site is less than the original web site that we still have in use. Cell phones cannot hold the volume of data as a computer.

Pictures of the inn, rooms and yurts are included on the mobile site.

One feature that may benefit guests coming to the inn is the "convenient location" page on the mobile site. You can click the page for directions while en route to the inn. Just make sure you are not the one driving.

Anything Goes at the Holly Theater is a Hit

I went to see the Cole Porter musical, "Anything Goes", at the Holly Theater on opening night. I initially attended since my spouse plays in the production. It was a great performance. I enjoyed it very much.

Called a "musical comedy voyage" it is about the shenanigans below decks on a cruise ship bound for London from New York.

Spring is Here in the Mountains

Today is the first day of Spring. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the bradford pear trees are blooming. Other trees are starting to show leaves.

This is a great time to get outdoors in the mountains. Hike to the many waterfalls, tour the wineries or just relax.

WINE HIGHWAY WEEKEND

The Winegrowers Association of Georgia is sponsoring its second annual Wine Highway Weekend on Saturday, March 31st, and Sunday, April 1st, 2007.
There will be a $10.00 fee for each participant which will be collected at the first winery visited. Travelers will receive a “Wine Highway Weekend” glass which will give them admission to ALL participating wineries at no additional charge. Normal tasting fees will not be charged to anyone participating in traveling the Wine Highway.
Member wineries and affiliate members will each provide their own unique open-house format, with many offering food and wine pairings, music, barrel and library wine tastings, discounts, drawings and other special attractions.
Hours vary from winery to winery and travelers should check individual websites for current hours and directions. Additional information and winery websites are available at www.georgiawine.com

THE BARN INN at Lake Rabun will offer will offer guests a complimentary glass of Georgia wine with Hors d’oeuvres during the Wine Highway Weekend.

Chery Cratty joins BURTON GALLERY to celebrate the Georgia Wine Highway Weekend. Chery will be demonstrating at the gallery on Saturday, March 31st from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Her work is liquid fiber painting on artist made paper. The base sheet is 100 % denim beaten to a pulp in a Hollander Beater. The paint is manila hemp beaten with the Hollander, and colored with the same pigments used in high quality oil paints.
