Cooling Off Near Dahlonega

Summertime heat is definitely here! Need ideas for cooling off near Dahlonega?

Our travels south to Atlanta during the summer months remind us of the difference in temperature between the Atlanta metro area and the North Georgia mountains. In Atlanta the heat from all the asphalt and buildings makes the temperatures feel much hotter. Here in the mountains, the lack of hard surfaces and buildings along with the woods usually make the temps 8-10 degrees cooler.

Why not enjoy the cooler North Georgia mountain air this summer and visit Cedar House Inn and Yurts?

We love to share the  many great ways of cooling off near Dahlonega with our summer guests.

We discovered our favorite way of cooling off near Dahlonega when we first running creek with mountainmoved to the area 18 years ago. Dick’s Creek is a favorite among the locals with numerous waterfalls and swimming holes of mountain cooled water. Bring some old towels from home and enjoy a cool swim in a mountain stream. We can show you how to get there when you check in. To see a video of this location visit Dicks Creek

Another great option for cooling off near Dahlonega is to take a kayak, canoe or tubing ride down the Chestatee River. The river is located on the way into town. Appalachian outfitters  will rent you the equipment and shuttle you back to your car. Bring some old towels to dry off.

If you come and stay with us for more than one night you may want to take a day trip to Tallulah Gorge State Park which is about an hour east of Dahlonega. If you get there early you can get a permit to wade in the river at the bottom of the gorge. This is a favorite way of cooling off for our guests who make the trip. Take some old towels to dry off. We really enjoy hiking down the gorge since it reminds us of Colorado with it’s rugged faces and scrubby trees. More information on our blog post at https://www.georgiamountaininn.com/2019/07/09/day-trip-tallulah-gorge/

Ways to Cool Off in the North Georgia Mountains

With Summer here the temperatures are getting warmer and many Atlantans are thinking about a quick escape to the North Georgia mountains and wine country. Dahlonega summer attractions offer many ways to stay cool. The temperatures up here can be warm as well but tend to be a little cooler than the city and suburbs. We don’t have all that asphalt and buildings to soak up and retain the heat. The forests provide mother nature’s air conditioning.

While visiting Cedar House Inn and Yurts many guests find outdoor activities are the perfect way to stay cool. Some choose tozip lining is a favorite dahlonega summer attraction hike on the Appalachian Trail where cool breezes always seem to blow. Favorite hikes are Preacher’s Rock near Woody Gap and Blood Mountain. We have a short video showing Preacher’s Rock on our YouTube channel which is linked to this blog to your right. Which Dahlonega summer attraction would you prefer?

Another option for staying cool is tubing down the Chestatee River or kayaking/canoeing on the Chestatee or Etowah Rivers. Appalachian Outfitters rents tubes and kayaks and provides shuttle services. Bring your own kayak and they will shuttle you for a fee. You can reach them at (706) 864-7117 or (706)867-7116 (for tubing).

If you want to get really wet bring some old towels for drying off and head up the mountain from the inn to Dick’s Creek. This is a favorite swimming hole and Dahlonega summer attraction with the locals so it may be busy on weekends. The creek features cold refreshing water that cascades down waterfalls into deep pools that are great for swimming. Some of the more daring types like to jump off the sides into the pools of water. You can watch a short video of the swimming hole at Dick’s Creek Video

Several weeks ago we took a hike for the first time to Raven Cliff Falls which is northeast of the inn on the Richard Russell Scenic Highway near Helen. The 2.5 mile trail is along a roaring creek. At the beginning of the trail is a deep pool of water with a rope swing. Guests told us they saw people wading around Raven Cliffs Falls. Bring some old towels and check it out. We also have videos of our hike on the YouTube channel link to your right.

If you are really looking for a thrill check out North Georgia’s zip lines. They are a favorite Dahlonega summer attraction for many guests. Helen and Amicalola Falls offer zip lines. Also the first alpine coaster in Georgia opened in Helen on Main Street in June 2019 and is open 7 days a week.

One is located next to Habersham Winery south of Helen and features the longest dual zip line in Georgia. The longest zip is almost 1/2 mile and reaches speeds up to 55 mph. That will cool you off and provide a thrill. Call 706-878-9477 for more info and reservations.

The State parks at Unicoi and Amicalola are also offering zip lines. Come stay with us, stay cool and enjoy the Dahlonega summer attractions.
