Have you had a rough week at the office or just have that yearning to escape life in the city even for just a quick getaway weekend? The North Georgia mountains provide a great place to get away from your busy life. Want a great way to chill in the great outdoors? Try tubing and kayaking down the scenic rivers in the Dahlonega area.
A day on the river can melt away those tensions you’ve been feeling – floating down the river on a tube or kayak, letting the water do the work as you float along and enjoy nature. Put on your bathing suit, plop into your tube and take the lazy river ride down the Chestatee as many times as you like by floating, getting out at the designated point, taking a short hike with your tube up the river and getting in again. Below we provide outfitters that rent the tubes. Map below shows tubing put in and take out locations on the Chestatee.
The most popular kayak float on the Chestatee River averages about two hours with normal river flow, but you can take your time and pull off along the way to rest and relax or play in the river or on the bank. There are several small sandy spots along your route. If you bring your own kayak, at the end of your float the outfitters will transport you and your kayak back to your car at the put in location for a nominal fee. Map below shows kayak put in and take out locations on the Chestatee.
While tube rentals in Lumpkin County are limited to the Chestatee River near Achasta. Kayaking can be enjoyed on both the Chestatee and Etowah Rivers and on the Amicalola River as well. The Etowah River is famous among kayakers for the tunnel ride. The tunnel was built during the gold mining days to divert water from the river to feed water to the water cannons used to blow away the mountain sides to expose the gold ore. The tunnel is still there and can be kayaked. Check out the youtube videos showing the ride.
South of town and west of Dawsonville is the Edge of the World trail on the Amicalola River that features class IV rapids for experienced kayakers with white water kayaks. You can hike the trail before committing to the whitewater ride. Map showing location compared to the inn https://goo.gl/maps/6vKmMJaWZCdFp34MA
